The UAE labour law 2021 is the new federal decree law that regulates the employment relationships in the private sector in the UAE. It came into force on 2 February 2022 and replaced the previous labour law of 1980. The new law aims to protect the rights and interests of both employers and employees, and introduces several changes and updates to the existing rules and regulations. Some of the main features of the new law are:

  • It abolishes the unlimited type of contracts and allows only limited or fixed-term contracts.
  • It introduces new work models such as full-time, part-time, temporary and flexible work.
  • It grants new types of leaves such as parental leave, emergency leave and unpaid leave.
  • It tackles issues related to harassment, bullying, physical violence and psychological abuse against employees.
  • It prohibits forced labour and discrimination on the basis of gender, race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability.
  • It spells out employers’ obligations towards employees, such as providing health insurance, training, accommodation and transportation.
